Turning a redundancy into a positive career move
One of our candidates recently found himself out of work due to
corporate restructuring. Inevitably he felt both emotionally and financially under pressure, particularly as other recruitment organizations had indicated a
lack of opportunities immediately available which might be suitable.
Our response to his situation was both positive and realistic. We
started by discussing his aspirations, abilities, strengths and core competencies. We then got to work identifying organizations that could use his skill
set and with our knowledge of the market and knowledge of our clients' needs, we were able to identify opportunities for him, even though, in some cases,
the organizations themselves did not necessarily have the headcount yet. We selected a number of companies that would be interested in him and,
with his agreement, sent his profile out to 10 banks and multi-national companies.
Within a week he got 3 interviews, one of which
immediately looked promising. We helped him develop the opportunity, right down to final salary negotiation and he was delighted to accept a Regional
Solution Architect role at over S$200,000 per annum. He is now able to look back on a positive career move, albeit one which he was forced to
make.
Total commitment to solving career problems
The following success story takes the form of a direct quote from
the candidate in question:
"I was out of a job for almost a year since being made redundant by a large
European Financial Institution that relocated its Operations functions away from Singapore, in 2005. Needless to say, I filed my CV with many headhunters,
including Tomnay Noble.
While many other headhunters faded away after a single attempt, Tomnay Noble
impressed me immensely, with their sincerity and high levels of professionalism:
Sincerity, because while the others dropped me into oblivion once my currency was un-tenable (in this
case it was my age), Tomnay Noble did not abandon me and instead kept presenting me to possible prospects in the industry. Their persistent and untiring
efforts in sincerely wanting to find me a placement paid off when I was able to secure a respectable position in a company that matched my core competencies
and expected remuneration, along with good career prospects.
Professionalism, because Tomnay Noble's team members would:
- Take great pains to constantly touch base with me by updating me of
potential openings with other employers - even going to the point of checking if I was comfortable with the names they had in mind. By contrast, because of
my age, some other headhunters had even suggested I short-change myself, to land a job.
- Pitch me to many potential employers, which ensured that I kept on top of
developments in the industry, and was able to meet and network with people in the industry. It also showed that they had depth in their potential employers
base.
- Ensure that each time that I was turned down by a prospective employer,
someone called me to update me of the outcome and re-inflate my ego by assuring me that there was nothing wrong with me and that they were already lining me
up for another potentially promising opening. That really kept my self-belief and spirits up. Many other headhunters and even employers to whom I applied
directly were very disappointing in this respect and did not even have the decency to let me know that I was not suitable for the position applied for.
These are two exemplary qualities that people in the
industry and HR managers in particular, can learn from Tomnay Noble. We all see this being mentioned in HR textbooks, but nobody puts it into practice in
the way Tomnay Noble did." |
